Vasectomy recovery. Your experiences?

My husband had a vasectomy 3 days ago. They made 2 incisions, one either side of his on the . He is in a lot of pain, his is swollen to twice the normal size and black and purple. It's awful. He went back to the doctor today who removed the sutures and said the swelling was worse because the stitches were very tight. He has been using an ice pack on it for 15 minutes every hour during the day since it was done and is on painkillers. The doctor also gave him antibiotics to take today, but didn't say he had an infection. Does this sound right to you? Have you had a vasectomy and how was your recovery?
