Why do Red States, on average, tend to get more money from the federal government than they pay in?

No, I don't think it's ironic. I think it's completely devoid of any significance whatsoever. Why don't we break it down into divisions where demographic differences can really be seen, such as counties, or even better: ZIP codes? I'd be willing to bet internal organs that the results will be markedly different.
