My boyfriend is from the UK. he needs to obtain a private visa to ukraine. Is it difficult to get it?

My boyfriend is an British citizen. he needs to obtain a private visa in order to visit me in ukraine. Is it difficult to get it? Does he need an original letter of invitation or it can be sent via email?thanks for your help.
