For a smoky eye, use the shadow in the same family, for example, if you're using dark brown, use a lighter brown and a matching highlighter. Use the lighter brown all over your lid, you can use a Q-tip as a makeup applicator. Then use the darker shade and just blend it in around your eye and don't go up too high. Then use the highlight shadow on your browbones. Then if you're too shaky with your hands with the liquid eyeliner, place your elbow on a table so you can steady your hand. Then add a black mascara and any shade of your favorite lipstick for a complete look.
